Workshop Sketch

I felt rather productive at tonight’s workshop, I got a nice start on an environment sketch. I want to clean it up a bit and populate the image more. I also did a quick robot sketch when I got home.

That robot is amazing. It looks like a bug’s head that detached and walked off. I like where you are going with the sketch, from the thumbnail it looks like a futuristic landscape, but I like how it uses your parabola-legged humans. I was thinking you would have to do one or the other, I like the mixture. ^_^

At what point does a person have a “style”? Does it change over time dramatically? I am not quite sure of the terms I want to use.

I wanted to add some figures to the image, but I’m rather unconfident when it comes to drawing people, so I resorted to that figure type you see on the left. Later I decided to try adding another figure and that’s where I braved drawing in another style. I’m not sure how much you can tell at this stage in the sketch, but it’s a robot and instead of legs, he’s going to have a jets of some sort that let him hover.

I’ve been thinking about “style” for a long time. As far as style relates to art, I think it’s something that an artist frequently uses in their works. It could be content they draw, the way they render an image etc. Sometimes it’s really obvious and you can look at a work (without seeing the artists name) and be able to tell who drew it.

I think styles can definitely change over time, it depends all on the artist trying out new things.

I figured that the robot hovered. Are you going to work on it more? Will there be subsequent versions of that sketch?

Yeah, I really hope to. I want to fill out the scene a bit more and work on the designs for the building to the left and the closest ship. My plan is to color the piece as well, I have particular artist I’d like to try and emulate (as far as the painting style, very rough and expressive).
