I always love imagery that really captures a huge sense of scale. This thumbnail was an nod towards that idea.

Passing
Feels funky to do so, but using this post as a reminder. My mom passed away Thursday morning (3-29-12). Complete shock for me, she was rather young (63) and in good health as far as we all knew. She went to sleep Wednesday night and didn’t wake up.
I’ve dealt with death before, but always felt rather detached. Or, I’ve been aware of the role that death plays from a very young age and accept it as a natural part, or extension, of life. I guess this is the closes it’s ever hit though, and the effect it’s had on me is much different. Not much more to say than that for now.
Here’s a little dragon, not un-like my previous post, that I think she’d enjoy. A little sketch of a gentle hearted lizard that smells something delicious on the breeze. Rock on little fellow, and I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Well hello there!
Ouch, way too long since posting! I started a new job back at the end of October, I’m now the Content Care Admin (of the student site, not the public site) at AnimationMentor.com. It’s an awesome place to work. I’ll get to that in another post.
I’ve been doing some sketching here and there, but I haven’t done nearly as much art as I’d like. Yesterday was the first time in months where I had a sustained session. I ended up doodling and just getting comfortable with painting again. It felt awesome to be painting again.
Small adjustments to the lil’ mercenary
A lot of times when I finish working on a piece, I’ll keep coming back to it in the following days. I’ll see how I respond to it and what stands out as needing work, refinement, clarification etc. In the case of the character I posted the other day, the lighting just wasn’t popping enough for me and overall the image felt a little too desaturated.
I haven’t decided if it’s done yet, but I’m going to let it rest a bit and see what I think in another couple days. Areas that I’m considering working on: overall texture pass (on skin and clothing). Storytelling elements (other characters? Perhaps silhouetted in the bg and fg).
Daily… Revisiting the little mercenary
I’m doing something a little different today, that is revisiting an older daily image. I always liked the look and feel of this character, even in its rough sketch state. I wanted to do another lighting/paint exercise today, but didn’t want to spend the time designing a new character. I figured I’d re-work the original sketch and then paint it up!
Here’s the updated drawing where I tried to get more specific with both his anatomy and clothing/outfit.

And the painted version. I learned a lot here, but there are definitely some elements that need work. One area is that of the clothing, I don’t quite like how the light falls on it. It doesn’t feel enough like cloth, and instead I think had a bit too much shine to it. I should do some cloth/clothing studies to tackle that.
